Buried down a cobblestone street in the heart of Old San Juan, lies an age-old testament to true Puerto Rican breakfast cuisine and the best breakfast in Old San Juan.

With its bright red awning and window showcasing their famous freshly baked pastries, this place is a sight not to be missed.

The Best Breakfast in Old San Juan: La Bombonera

Dating back to 1902, La Bombonera is a fixture to the Old San Juan community, serving up breakfast and lunch for over 100 years. Although it may be tucked away and easily missed, you know you found the right spot as the place is continuously packed with people, often pouring out onto the streets.

It’s impossible to be in business this long and not be amazing at what you do. Should you arrive and think the wait will be too long, think again. Their service is quick and efficient and they have a ton of seating available. The bar seats are a great choice as you can see all the action and get a great view of their 85-year-old coffee machine. This large silver contraption is amazing to look at and continues to press a wonderful cup of coffee for their delicious cafe con leche.

Breakfast in San Juan – what to order

When ordering, it is imperative to try their mallorcas. These freshly baked moist, buttery, powdered sugared, bites of heaven are what they are known for. Order one up with just butter and powdered sugar, or make a sandwich out of it with egg, ham, bacon, or cheese for a bit of a savory sweet goodness.

(Perhaps take some items to go!)

The best part about this place is the price. Breakfast for two people will rarely be over $15, a huge steal. This must-visit location will become a favorite of yours, as it did mine, and just may have you coming back daily.
